Writing Achievements

1995, FAW Mary Grant Bruce Award for Children's Literature:
For a short story I wrote under the name of Caroline Huddle-Lamb. Here's what the judge, Jan McVeity, thought: Congratulations to Caroline Huddle-Lamb for her hard hitting and tightly scripted story 'To remember...' (A stylish genre of mystery/SF/social commentary.) The win is a remarkable achievement considering Caroline was 14 when she wrote the story and was competing on equal terms with mainly adult writers.

1997, Letters to the Editor:
I survived Year 12 through ritual reading of The Australian, and occasionally wrote an email to the letters page. About 6 of these were published (under the name Caroline Heske Huddle-Lamb), then I slunk back into my hole.

1999, April, Del Rey Workshop Runner Up, fantasy chapter/partial chapter:
ERANNON, by Caroline Heske: This chapter has now unfortunately been edited from my manuscript, but I keep it to use as a short story some time. Here's what they thought: This chapter works as a more-or-less self-contained short story. Though longer than it needs to be, and confusing in parts, with an unfortunate tendency to lapse into monologue, this chapter nonetheless stands out for its rich and complex characterizations, its technical ambition (a story within a story), and its tale of youthful idealism tempered into sensitive maturity by life's hard lessons--a tale told by an assassin, no less.

1999, May, Del Rey Workshop Runner Up, fantasy chapter/partial chapter:
ERANNON, by Caroline Heske: This chapter has been extensively revised, but remains an important part of my novel. Here's what they thought: We wanted to see more action here to speed things up (as mentioned in the Author's Comments), but felt Caroline's character development was excellent, as was her writing, especially the attention to detail.

1999, November, H2A Writing Fiction:
For a folio written for a subject offered by the Melbourne Uni English department. It was the opening of a historical fantasy novel about the development of ideas about religion and science, where Socrates is given to chance make Paris' Choice (about the golden apple) over again.

1999, Felix Raab Prize for European History:
Melbourne Uni history prize which I received based on essays I wrote for Renaissance Florence.

2000, June, The Real Game:
A play (drama/comedy) I wrote about university life. I've got the full version on my writing page. I'm working on developing it into a production to be performed round April 2001.
